Saluda, North Carolina

Saluda Real Estate

Straddling Polk and Henderson Counties at the top of the steep Saluda Grade, the small town of Saluda offers beautiful scenery, amazing restaurants and fabulous art galleries to entice the senses.  Saluda real estate is a welcome retreat from the frenetic pace of a big city.

Saluda History

With its origins as a stop for herders and traders, Saluda real estate (at that time referred to as Pace's Gap) came into its own when the railroad decided to build tracks through the Saluda Mountains.  Several boarding houses and hotels were constructed to house and feed the hundreds of men working on the railway.  This brought a thriving economy to this sleepy little town.

With the completion of the railroad in 1879, tourists began to visit Pace's Gap regularly.  By 1881, the town had grown enough for its citizens to request a name change to Saluda, in honor of the beautiful Saluda Mountains.

Through the Depression and both World Wars, Saluda's economy went through a rough spell.  However, since the 1960s, people have left their big city lives to settle in the slower pace that Saluda real estate offers.  Craftsmen and artists find peace and inspiration in the beauty surrounding the city and the homey atmosphere has been inviting to couples wanting to raise their families.

Education in Saluda

Students attend school at Saluda Elementary, the only school actually located on Saluda real estate.  The school educates children in grades K-8.  The school is run by the Polk County Schools district.  High school students attend school in nearby Hendersonville.

Local Saluda Attractions

Don't let it's small size fool you.  Saluda real estate is home to many artisans.  Therefore, art and music are big here.  The Flat Rock Playhouse is a wonderful place to enjoy the performing arts.  Tosh's Whistle Stop Cafe, Frank & Amy's Front Porch Coffee Bar, the Purple Onion and the Saluda Mountain Jamboree are all great places to enjoy live music.  Random Arts, Heartwood, Your Heart's Desire and Saluda Fine Arts are all galleries that exhibit local art in its finest light.  North Carolina Arboretum and North Carolina Botanical Gardens show off the local Saluda scenery at its best.  Fishing, waterfalls, hiking, bicycling, hunting and golf are all great ways to enjoy Mother Nature's gifts.

Annual events in Saluda include the Saluda Challenge, Saluda Arts Festival, Coon Dog Day, the local Town BBQ and Home Town Christmas.  The Saluda Arts Festival is not only an exhibit for local artisans, but it also a venue for local musicians.  Coon Dog Day is a fun way to honor the hunting man's best friend.  There's a 5k run, dog judging, crafts, art contests and live music going on all day, free of charge.

Visit the Polk County Chamber of Commerce calendar of events for local events in Saluda.

Residents of Saluda real estate are proud of their small town and friendly atmosphere.  If you're looking for a getaway from the fast-paced lifestyle in bigger cities, Saluda may be just the respite you're looking for.
