Born in Battle Creek, Michigan, John moved at an early age when his father, an Episcopal priest, relocated the family to Florida.  John attended public and private schools and upon graduation in 1964 entered the United States Naval Academy.  After graduation he attended flight training and spent the next 11 years on active duty with he Navy.  John spent the next 17 years in the Naval Reserve...being recalled to active duty for a year during Desert Storm.  John retired as a Captain in 1996.
